悶熱的廣州，電風扇將鐵絲掛著的衣裙吹起，縫隙間露出服裝女工的臉，那些即待出廠的衣服不知將被誰穿起，流水線上每一張面孔的未來都不夠清晰。冬季的巴黎，廣州服裝設計師馬可帶著她創立的品牌「無用」參加 2007 年巴黎冬季時裝周。她把她的服裝埋在土中，讓自然與時間一起完成最後的效果。她喜歡手工製造所傳遞的情感，厭倦流水式生產，是一個不喜歡時裝的時裝設計師。黃土滿天的山西汾陽，礦區小裁剪店偶爾有礦工光顧。他們來縫縫補補，順便聊幾句家長里短…… 沿著服裝提供的線索，賈樟柯這部紀錄片在三個地區拍攝，發現了同一個經濟鏈條下不同人民的現實。衣可蔽體，原來也可傳情，也可載道。

Amid a wintry day in Paris, Chinese “anti-fashion” designer Ma Ke, known for infusing a sense of time and nature into her line, prepares her newly established brand "Wu Yong" (Useless) to be launched in a spectacular show. Engulfed in the clatter of sewing machines, women work quietly under fluorescent lamps in a garment factory. Bursting with the subtlety of everyday life, miners frequent a small tailor's shop in the town of Fenyang for repairs, alterations, and vivacious chats. Three portraits of clothing and the people who design, manufacture, and wear them. Jia's latest documentary uses this routine commodity as a focal point to expose the lives of people experiencing different economic realities.
