Chinese Cinema: A New Generation

In the 1980s, audience in Hong Kong and around the world rediscovered Chinese Cinema through the work of the Fifth Generation of Chinese filmmakers. The Sixth Generation came to prominence in the 1990s, but the attributes of these filmmakers are not as easily categorised as their predecessors. The development of Chinese filmmaking at this stage and the filmmakers that are grouped under this labelled defies generalisation. At the turn of the century, benefiting from the new funding opportunities and the prevalence of digital technology, a new breed of filmmakers emerges, whose films never ceases to surprise us. While it is futile to try to classify their style or label them as one specify generation, one thing is certain: these filmmakers have made an impact on the international stage as well as Chinese culture that they demand our attention. With this in mind, we present “Chinese Cinema: A New Generation”, a selection of the work by seven rising Chinese directors, in this edition of Hong Kong Asian Film Festival. These films might be made in a variety of styles, but they all share a sense of vibrancy and vitality. It is for you, our audience, to create your own definition of new Chinese Cinema.
