Synopsis

The music-hall opening sequence pays homage to the “Black Venus” Josephine Baker, an American-born performer who moved to Paris in 1925 and whose banana skirt and exotic/erotic dance dazzled the 1920s Paris. This oddball animated feature in silent film style recounts how Madame Souza has brought up her grandson Champion to become a Tour de France cyclist but Champion is kidnapped by the French mafia during the race. Madame Souza pedals a paddleboat to Belleville (New York) with her dog Bruno in pursuit of Champion. The Triplets of Belleville, who were background singers to Josephine Baker, lend Madame Souza more than a helping hand.
