John Rabe

2009 saw two historical epics about the Japanese atrocities in the 1937 Massacre of Nanking during the second Sino-Japanese war. While Lu Chuan’s City of Life and Death deploys the point of view of a humanized, unwilling Japanese soldier, German director Florian Gallenberger bases his film on the diaries of John Rabe, a Nazi German industrialist, to look back on this traumatizing history. After working in China for 27 years and 142 days, Rabe (Ulrich Tukur) is called back from Siemens Nanking to Berlin. During his farewell party, Japanese planes start bombing Nanking (the then capital of China), which prompts Rabe to open the gate of the factory and let the Chinese workers hide under the Nazi flag. While everyone chooses to leave Nanking or look on, Rabe decides to stay and set up an international safety zone for civilians. The American doctor Robert Wilson (Steve Buscemi) doesn’t trust the Nazis but he has to collaborate with Rabe in order to rescue the Nanking Chinese.
