In the world of fine wine, France’s Bordeaux means the land and brand of perfect winemaking that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. More than the visual, the olfactory, and the gustatory (Russell Crowe’s narration purveys further aural pleasure), wine is always inextricably bound up with class, wealth, and power. The fluctuation in global economy with the rise of China, however, brings Bordeaux into its biggest crisis. Traditional market has shrunk while the Chinese nouveau riche throng to squeeze in for their collections. The world’s wine production cannot satisfy the voracious appetite of the Chinese market. Lured by huge profits, China has begun to make their own wine. What does fate have in store for Bordeaux? |
