The Nightingale

The Nightingale is the second Sino-French co-production (the first being Wang Xiaoshuai’s 11 Flowers) since the signing of a co-production treaty in 2010. Philippe Muyl adapts his 2002 old-man-and-neglected-girl-bonding film The Butterfly (Le papillon) to a Chinese megacity context. The Little Princess Renxing’s father (Qin Hao) is the best architect in Beijing and her mother (Li Xiaoran) a business executive. Apparently, it’s a perfect family but in reality they are emotionally estranged. One day, the father is flying to Hong Kong and then Tokyo; the mother has a business deal to settle in Paris; the maid has to attend her son’s wedding. The Little Princess has no choice but to follow her grandfather back to his rural hometown in Yangshuo, Guangxi. Guangxi’s celebrated scenic landscape is not just for cinematographic consumption but also for the urban princess to return to nature and for the alienated family to reconcile and reunite.
