Synopsis

The sumptuous, painterly and unabashedly theatrical adaptation of a short story from Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly's 1874 anthology Les Diaboliques, tells the tale of Roberto, a bored, decadent dandy in the nightly pursuit of ever-harder-to-find distraction. One evening, his eye is caught by a beautiful prostitute whose offer he accepts, and whom he soon comes to realise is none other than a missing noblewoman, the Countess of Sierra Leone. She begins to tell her story of a marriage without passion, treachery leading to a shocking murder and a woman's ultimate revenge. Rita Azevedo Gomes adapts the original story in a theatrical yet picturesquely style which reveals the life of the monarchist aristocracy of the nineteenth century who had lost their power but not their money, and who obviously surrendered to morally irresponsible behaviour.

本片改編自法國作家1874年出版的選集，講述風流倜儻的 Roberto巧遇美艷不可方物的花街神女，她神秘的過去把Roberto深深吸引。神女原是伯爵夫人，與丈夫的婚姻有名無實，最終紅杏出牆，情人亦招來殺身之禍。表面楚楚可憐的伯爵夫人不但要為情人報仇，還要給丈夫最大的羞辱作懲罰。 導演把十八世紀貴族表面華麗，其實糾纏不清、糜爛虛偽的情慾關係，巧妙地以接近舞台劇的形式拍成電影。由服飾的細節到場景的設計、以至演員的表情和演譯，都精心布置，戲中有戲，為觀眾帶來一個看電影、看舞台劇、看畫的視覺之旅。
