What
an idea, the whole of Paris enchanted by sleep, except
for those in the air. 'Paris Qui Dort' is the first
feature film of the great French film director, René
Clair, and also – although it was not seen as such
at the time - the first ever science-fiction movie.
By placing the picture-postcard Paris in a fantastical
context; by emphasising the hidden geometry of the
city and its buildings; by showing a city, built by
people for people, without people, Clair suggests a
sublimely suspended dream place, where people never grow old.

Man
Originally
played as an intermission with no sound, this film
is now a must for any fan/historian of fine art. The
film is a surrealistic concoction of unrelated images,
reflecting Clair's interest in Dada, a fashionable
radical approach to visual art which relied on experimentation
and surreal expressionism. Featuring cameos by Man
Ray, Marcel Duchamp, and other notables. As unusual
as it is to watch a film with no sound, the images
created by the artists provide an extremely unique
experience for the viewer.
