Appearing
in the 80s, amidst the burst of AIDS, Mauvais Sang
is a highlight of the decade. Alex, a
lonesome street punk, hooks up with a gang
of elderly Parisian hoods who are planning
to steal the serum for curing deadly AIDS-like
virus, hidden away in a high-rise penthouse.
Things are complicated by the strategies of
a woman who also wants the serum, as well as
by Alex's falling for the young mistress of
a fellow gang member. Predictably, the heist
does not go quite according to plan. With his
eye for exhilarating visuals and moody romanticism,
Carax uses the conventions of a futuristic
thriller to address his personal concerns about
young love and solitude.

On
the cod island, two drunken men commit a senseless murder. One is sentenced to death and must
wait in the custody of the island's captain guard until a guillotine can arrive. During
the months of waiting, the convict Neel becomes the protégé of the captain's wife and she guides
Neel to redemption through good works, sobriety, and study. Gradually people on the island discover
his generosity; however, the French noble who govern the islands criticize the captain for
the latitude he gives his wife. What will he do when the guillotine arrives? This brilliant
work of Leconte is more about integrity, honor, love, and other intangibles than it is about
its relatively simple storyline and the characters involved.
