Chronicling the young Che Guevara's travels around South America in the early 50s, The Motorcycle Diaries is a visually stunning road movie where the most important journey takes place within its hero's head - Guevera going from disaffected medical student to rebel with a cause. Ernesto 'Che' Guevara, a 23-year-old medical student, embarks on an 13,000km trip from Argentina to Venezuela with biochemist friend Alberto Granado. The two men's subsequent journey will open their eyes to social injustice, beautiful women, human kindness, more beautiful women, and the true meaning of the term saddle sore. Adapted from a journal written by Che when he was 23 years old.

Set in the years between 1935 and 1967, Jamie Foxx stars in this biopic of legendary soul and R&B singer Ray Charles. Skillfully edited and with a keen eye for period detail, the narrative weaves in and out of the past in an interlocking tapestry of the man's rise to fame in the 1950s and '60s. Director Taylor Hackford worked for 15 years to get this story to the screen. Undoubtedly one of the best performances this year, Jamie Foxx's portrayal of the legendary Ray Charles not only captures his look but also his mannerisms, speech patterns and even his way of playing music. No wonder he earns the Best Actor in the Oscars.

The film is intended as a biography, no doubt a tribute as well, to the poet and novelist Sylvia Plath. Talented but plagued by her own demons Sylvia's early relationship with husband and fellow poet, Ted Hughes, is dominated by Ted's ambition and success. In the early years of marriage Sylvia lacks inspiration and senses Ted's infidelity. Sylvia's deepening depression towards the end, when they are separated, that Sylvia explored the dark depths of her soul and write the brilliant poetry. An appropriately moody, grey tone and introspective acting by Gwyneth Paltrow evolved an ideal texture for this tragedy.

Based on the memoirs of Nazi secretary Traudl Junge - who told her story in the compelling doc Blind Spot, Downfall begins with Junge arriving at the bunker. From there it moves outwards, taking in the army's chaotic attempts to defend the capital while, in the rabbit warren of concrete corridors that make up the bunker, Hitler and his closest advisors lose their grip on power and reality. Claustrophobic, tense and often riveting, Downfall is extremely controversial in its native Germany, director Oliver Hirschbiegel's meticulous film is no sensational shockfest, but a living, breathing historical recreation of Hitler's downfall.
