Adapted from the novel by Witi Ihimaera, Whale
Rider is a contemporary growing pains yarn,
infused with the mysticism of ancient Maori
legend - celebrating tradition and redefining
it for our times. Our heroine is Pai, a self-possessed
yet acutely sensitive young girl born into
a long line of tribal chiefs. However, her
gender means Pai can never succeed the title.
When her father and uncle both reject the
calling, the future of the tribe looks grim.
Director Niki Caro has done wonders in bringing
this hard struggle of a determined girl to
find her true place maybe the one that will
resonate with women around the world. Moving
and simply extraordinary, the 12-year old
Keisha Castle-Hughes's performance wins her
Oscar nominee for Best Actress in 2003.

dad's school of hard knocks, younger
brother is terrified
of the growling, grey-bearded, and seemingly
insane patriarch. The film is at once
highly naturalistic
and dreamily abstract, playing out its mythic
themes through vibrantly detailed characterizations

remarkable performances by the entire cast. 5

French film Ponette is an attempt to enter
the world of a 4-year-old girl whose mother
has just been killed in a car accident on
one of the winding roads in the mountainous
countryside near Lyon. Played by pudgy, sad-eyed
Victoire Thivisol (winner of a controversial
but perfectly understandable Best Actress
award at the 1996 Venice Film Festival),
Ponette turns her grief into something else,
something more childish and yet more mature.
Convinced that her mother has been visiting
her in her dreams, and that some day she

Ripped from the headlines, this docu-drama from
Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda (previous
work, After Life) is based on a real 1988
event prosaically known as the "Affair of the Four Abandoned Children of Nishi-Sugamo". In this fictional retelling, 12-year-old Akira has to look after his siblings
when his mother absconds, leaving them
in a tiny apartment with just a few thousand
yen. As Akira struggles to keep the family
going, the children gradually slip into
a dreamlike existence of unlimited playtime,
instant noodles, and confused distress.
