CITY LIGHTS was the first film Chaplin made during the sound
era. Insistent in his refusal to make it a talkie, Chaplin
reckoned that dialogue would destroy the simple appeal of
the Tramp, who falls hopelessly in love with a blind girl
and tries to find the money to pay for her surgery. The film
proved Chaplin's artistry in his story-telling techniques,
his command of body and facial movements as a form of expression,
independent of sound. The scene where the Tramp meets the
girl, now with her sight restored, is one of the most moving
scenes in cinema.
