There is a certain lightness to the early scenes in HIGH HEELS that's bolstered by Almodovar's typical penchant for bright color schemes and pulsating, extravagant music, and bizarre humor. As the title suggests, the film's melodramatic females are all dressed stylishly, and there's the requisite nod to Bunuel's legendary foot fetish. Yet despite attempting to tackle the intricacies of mother-daughter relationships, religion, identity and sacrifice, HIGH HEELS is a film that's worth the concentration.

Jeff Costello is a solitary hit-man who lives by his own rules. After killing a nightclub owner, he is pursued by the police as their prime suspect. While he manages to provide sufficient alibi to get him released on custody, Costello in no way relieved: the police are still keeping a close eye on him, while his employers have decided to have him killed.
