What is the best of time? A time for love, for freedom, or for youth? A time yearning to love and be loved. We remember it because we lost it forever. It is wonderful because we can only recall with our memory. A multi-layered account of three generations of a Taiwanese family embroiled in a crisis of self-doubt about the purpose of life, YI-YI opens with a wedding, ends with a funeral and includes a birth, an attempted suicide and a breakdown to make an illuminating whole. The supreme restraint in Edward Yang's presentation gives the intricately nuanced saga a naturalistic, contemplative tone throughout, making him worthy of the Best Director honour at Cannes Film Festival in 2000.
