Winner of the Un Certain Regard Award at Cannes Film Festival in 2003, Marco Tullio Giordana's passionate epic covers more than 30 years in the life of an Italian family from 1966 to 2000. At the centre of the story are two Roman brothers, Nicola and Matteo Carati. The screenplay uses events during those years as reflective surfaces for the lives of the story's numerous characters. Other than the people, Italy the country, suffering through Mafia assassinations and periods of massive social unrest, also endures its share of growing pains. In no way an easy task, Giordana folds them all into his luxuriously expansive vision.
