Compared to Yazaki’s latest film Strawberry Shortcakes (HKAFF 2007), this earlier work in 1991 is considerably more intense and severe. Based on Chiki Umino’s manga, this is a story about a brother and his younger sister. Having lost his memory after an accident, Rei gets a visitor in the hospital who tells him she is his wife… but is she? Will Rei regain his memory and realise how they are really related? With slow pace, very little dialogue and captivating cinematography, it is worth a visit down the memory lane for anyone who admires Yazaki’s unique style.

The first feature of Kawase’s (Director of Mourning Forest, 2007 Cannes Film Festival Grand Prize), Suzaku is set in a small hamlet that is steadily losing population after a railroad project was canceled. Kawase's focus is on the relationships within a family that slowly disintegrates within these conditions over 15 years. Kawase lived with the residents of the community for some time before filming and picked a cast almost entirely composed of amateur locals. The result is a delicate slice of life so true to reality that it seems dialogue and narrative action are unnecessary.

Shoko, a translator with a drinking problem, and Matsuki, a handsome gay doctor, decide to come together in a marriage of convenience to satisfy their parents. All semblances of normalcy breaks down when Matsuki's boyfriend becomes jealous, Shoko decides she wants a baby, and her parents find out about Matsuki’s homosexuality. Twinkle has a breezy stride, classy, upscale setting and a keen sense of visual humor. Like his latest film Tokyo Tower (HKAFF 2007), Masuoka never fails to offer us his unique insight into the contemporary human psyche.

Shunji Iwai is a chameleon; from romantic Love Letter to quirky Swallowtail Butterfly to his latest tribute to Japanese master Ichikawa Kon, Filmful Life (HKAFF 2007), he never fails to re-invent himself. All About Lily Chou Chou is just another example of the director’s versatility. Where does a lonely, sensitive introvert look for happiness? If not in this world, how about the cyber world? It seems to be the way to go in this film. But is it? The film is a suspense thriller created with convergence of music, film and cyber / pop.
