Like Memento and Irreversible, this is a film told in backward sequence; unlike those two films which begin with violent occurrences, 5x2 begins with an alternative form of violence – divorce. As the title goes, the audience is presented with five scenes about two people, witnessing how they fall out of love back to how they fall in love. This is Ozon's take on Ingmar Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage; but instead of offering insight into a failed marriage, he simply observes the mismatched couple as their relationship flounders.
