Tokyo Tower, a broadcasting tower and symbol of postwar Japanese economic recovery gets the Empire State's Sleepless in Seattle treatment by becoming a code for familial love in this film. Based on Lily Franky's popular autobiography, the film tells the story of talented but lazy illustrator Masaya, who gets a wake-up call when news of his mother falling ill reaches him. He works hard, turns his life around and invites his mother to move to Tokyo and live with him. Sadly though, their days together are dated due to her terminal illness… Crisscrossing through time with flashback scenes, Tokyo Tower depicts the mother-son relationship in a way that is uniquely Asian without losing its universal appeal.
Maggie Cheung in this award-winning role (Best Actress at Cannes) plays Emily, a fading rock singer whose heroin addiction crumbled her life and separated her form her son Jay. Out of jail, clean from drugs, Emily moves to Paris to start a new life in the hope that she will one day re-connect with Jay, who is now under the care of his grandparents. Director Olivier Assayas specifically wrote the role of Emily for Maggie Cheung, and she reciprocates with a thoughtful, intense and affective performance. Nick Nolte’s portrayal of Jay’s caring grandfather and Emily’s understanding father-in-law is another factor that contributes to the film’s critical acclaim.
