Antonioni, who bade the world farewell last year, insisted on making films for as long as he could. When filming Beyond the Clouds, he had suffered a stroke and was paralyzed. As a result, this star-studded film was completed with help from Wim Wenders, who wrote its prologue and epilogue and worked on the screenplay. Adapted from short stories in Antonioni's book “The Bowling Alley on the Tiber”, the film shows in vignettes characters caught up in romantic obsessions, with a brooding director played by John Malkovich as the connection. In the classically Antonioni way, the impact of these stories is not in the words but in the way the mood, texture and the acting build each situation into a visually intense parable.

The siblings have grown so far apart that they do not even know each other's exact whereabouts, but when a handsome stranger begins making inroads into each of their lives, it gradually draws them together again, and back into their shared past. Like Kieslowski’s Red, the film is structured as a kind of puzzle box in which there are no such things as chance encounters and history is forever verging on repeating itself.
