Already hailed by many as one of the most charming Indian dramas in recent years, writer-director Ritesh Batra’s Mumbai-set debut tells the story of two lonely souls who are coincidentally connected over a mix-up in lunchbox service. Saajan (Irrfan Khan, the adult Pi in Life of Pi) is a grouchy and withdrawn widower who’s counting his days to retirement after 35 years in a joyless job; Ila (Nimrat Kaur), meanwhile, is a sad and neglected housewife despite being a wizard of a cook. As the pair of strangers begin pouring their hearts out to each other in the hand-written notes they hide in the wrongly delivered lunchbox every day, the film gently reveals itself to be a heart-warming tale on the sorrows of aging and the redemptive value of human connection. And as the characters whimsically suggest: sometimes the wrong train might just get you to the right station.
