北京街上的途人、渴求降雨的農夫、倒閉工廠的工人、擁擠沙灘上的遊客、地震後的建築工人、修補漁網的漁夫、等待演出機會的舞者，都是王小帥鏡頭下的現代中國。以流動影像呈現中國人民面貌，建構一幅幅代表著人民生命力的肖像。電影將鏡頭放回百姓身上，從而提醒著我們人才是構成國家的基本。這趟他以第一身角度引領觀眾通過自己的家族背景，探索現代中國的複雜面貌，反思個人身份與國家的關係。透過如同凝視的鏡頭，王小帥嘗試探討國、家與自身之間的種種疑問。

As one of the foremost filmmakers of the Sixth Generation, Wang Xiaoshuai has spent over two decades examining Chinese society and psyche through acclaimed narrative films like Beijing Bicycle and Red Amnesia. The auteur paints a vivid personal portrait of his homeland in his documentary. Traveling from Beijing to Ningxia to different corners of China, Wang acts as a guide and a window into the comings, goings and yearnings of everyday people. Through fixed long shots of different people in different places, he traces the footprints of the past and present and visualizes the pulse of contemporary China.
