Though Meili’s name means beautiful, her life is anything but beautiful. The 22-year-old was abandoned by her parents as a child and raised by her sister. As a teenager, she was raped by her brother- in-law and gave birth to a child. Unable to hold down a job peacefully because of her abusive family, Meili hopes to go elsewhere with her girlfriend, but love too betrays her. Closely followed in the film’s many long takes, Chi Yun, who co-wrote the script with first-time director Zhou Zhou, delivers a powerful performance in the title role of a young woman forced onto a cruel path of desperation and revenge.
