Nutan is a government clerk who always plays by the book. On election day, he is tasked with conducting a polling station in a conflict-ridden jungle area. Despite facing apathetic voters and looming fears about an attack by rebel forces, Nutan insists on getting the job done, to the annoyance of the security forces assigned to protect him. India’s representative at the Academy Awards Best Foreign Film race in 2017, Newton is a subversive and darkly funny satire about the state of democracy in India. At the same time, the film’s absurd take on bureaucracy and modern elections is likely to have relevance in other parts of the world.
