Adapted from Dai Sijie’s own best-selling French novel set in the Chinese early 70s under the Cultural Revolution, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress tells a triangle love story between Luo (Chen Kun) and Ma (Liu Ye), two urban intellectuals sent to Phoenix Mountain for a Maoist re-education, and the Little Seamstress (Zhou Xun), who is the granddaughter of the most revered tailor and the toast of the village. Luo narrates the North Korean film The Flower Girl (1972) to the villagers and his storytelling surpasses the film itself. The violinist Ma plays Mozart to the villagers, informing them the composition is titled “Mozart is thinking of Chairman Mao.” Luo and Ma attempt to transform the Little Seamstress through teaching her how to read and write. They read the forbidden authors such as Balzac, Flaubert, and Romain Rolland to her. How will the overwhelming and redemptive power of reading transform their lives? |
