Set in 1975, one year before Mao’s death, during the last stage of China’s Cultural Revolution, the story takes place in a rural village in southwest mountainous China, to which intellectuals are relocated from big cities to answer the call of Mao’s Third Front policy. In the very last year of Cultural Revolution, the eleven-year-old boy Wang Han (Liu Wenqing) experiences his last carefree innocence before becoming aware of it. Han accidentally encounters a fugitive hiding in the woods. The fugitive has killed the rapist of his little sister, who happens to be Han’s schoolmate, and asks Han not to let out the secret. Pockmarked by violence and repression, the socio-political atmosphere half-comprehended by Han becomes the backdrop for his sexual and sensory awakening. As the last one of Wang Xiaoshuai’s three autobiographical films, the film is shot through with nostalgic lyricism of Wang’s personal memories. |
