In the context of ever-escalating globalization, the distance between nations is getting closer and closer. In this telling documentary, the destinies of the French flax farmers in Normandy and the Chinese workers in Kingdom textile mills are inextricably woven together. France produces 40% of the world’s flax and Normandy accounts for about half of France’s production, that is, 20% of the world’s flax. The Chinese is their biggest client. But these farmers lead a risky life in which yields hinge on “rain or shine,” sky and soil and temperature. To make matters worse, the Chinese trade in dollars so the French lose money in the differences in exchange rates. On the other hand, the Chinese factory workers do not fare any better. They earn meager wages and have to send most of them home. |
