“Nothing is more beautiful than Paris, except the memory of Paris. And nothing is more beautiful than Peking, except the memory of Peking. And I, in Paris, I remember Peking and I count my treasures.” Sunday in Peking is French New Wave essayist auteur Chris Marker’s Beijing travelogue, a photographic memory album, and his first commercially distributed film. It won the short film award at the Tours Festival in 1956, trumping contenders such as Alain Resnais and Jacques Demy. Back in 1955, Chris Marker, Paul Ricoeur, Armand Gatti were among the French delegation invited to celebrate the sixth anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. Marker observed China for six weeks and spent three weeks in Beijing documenting the colorful, spirited parade in front of Tiananmen and the Beijing citizens’ display of gymnastics and physical exercise. The thoughtful commentary track adds to the colorful images meditations on Beijing’s past and future in comparison with Western civilization, leaving precious testimony to a pre-traumatic China. |
