It was at a screening of her film “Indian Song” in 1975 when the experimental novelist and filmmaker Marguerite Duras, then 65, met Yann Andrea, an admirer some 40 years her junior. They began a five year long correspondence before Andrea moved in with Duras to be her confidant, caretaker and lover. Ignoring their age difference, enduring Duras’ mood swings and fits, Andrea stood by Duras through the years while she finished her last novel “The Lover”. Andrea immortalized their story in a novel, on which “Cet amour-là” is based. Duras was known to be curmudgeonly and had problems with alcoholism; but Yann Andrea saw her in a different light. Still a commanding presence at the age of 75, Jeanne Moreau is perhaps the only actress able to portray Duras’ mystique – an unlikely co-existence arrogance and seductiveness.
