At the beginning of Fever, two Parisian high school kids, Damien (Martin Loizillon) and Pierre (Pierre Moure), strangle a woman who is “too beautiful to die.” The two teenagers don’t know the victim. Has this “crime without motive” merely happened by chance? On the other hand, Zoe (Julie-Marie Parmentier), the optician in the neighborhood, bumps into them as they leave the crime scene. Since then, the teenage murderers who follow chance and women are being followed. They often contemplate philosophical questions and reflect upon the genocide guilt of WWII. Are they the embodiment of what Hannah Arendt calls “the banality of evil” or the Freudian return of the repressed family history? The film title comes from Peggy Lee’s sexually suggestive jazz number “Fever” (1958). The French singer Camille’s rendition of “Fever” repeatedly returns to haunt the film’s soundtrack and atmosphere with its deceptive lightheartedness.
