The French title of Fidelio: Alice’s Journey has three cultural references, all featuring powerful female interiorities: (1) Beethoven’s opera Fidelio (1814) about conjugal fidelity (2) the Greek epic poem Homer’s Odyssey where Penelope patiently waits for her husband to come back from ten years of wandering at sea (3) the female fantasy and exploration in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865). In contrast to Odyssey, it is the 30-year-old mechanic Alice (Ariane Labed) who boards the old freighter Fidelio while her faithful Norwegian boyfriend Felix (Anders Danielsen Lie) patiently waits for her return. In this journey of self-discovery, Alice discovers her old flame Gael (Melvil Poupaud), who happens to be the Captain of Fidelio, and the diary of the former mechanic documenting private desires and public perils. She frankly explores her own desires as well as those of her male colleagues while trying to keep Fidelio navigating safely. How many great loves can one has in life?
