Director Alix Delaporte’s debut feature is set in a small fishing harbor in Normandy with which she is familiar. For her, Angele & Tony amounts to an American western film taking place in a French fishing village with the “Normandy fishermen as Cowboys, the sea as the Great Plains.” The mysterious beauty Angele (Clotilde Hesme) and the potbellied Tony (Grégory Gadebois) meet because of a newspaper personal ad. Tony helps her find a job, teaches her how to recognize fish, and gives her a room, which displeases his widowed mom Myriam (Évelyne Didi) who lives with him in the house. Angele seduces Tony but he doesn’t succumb to the temptation, disbelieving his luck. It turns out that Angele is on parole and wants to find a new father for her young son. Is this unlikely couple really meant for each other? In addition to the romance, the film also features anti-government demonstrations against the importation of South East Asian fish and the riot police.
