A certain young wave in French cinema brings together I Don’t Want to Sleep Alone (Tsai Ming-liang, 2006) and Magic in the Moonlight (Woody Allen, 2014). Gaby (Lolita Chammah) arrives in the country house to relax under the advice of her psychiatrist. Her boyfriend Vincent (Félix Moati) leaves her alone because he feels she doesn’t love him; what she needs is his company. Vincent tells Gaby he will come back when the tree drops all its leaves. The lonely Gaby
doesn’t want to stay alone so she takes men home from the local café to spend a chaste night. When the men in town are no longer willing to be her asexual companions, Gaby has no choice but to crash with Nico (French singer-songwriter Benjamin Biolay), the caretaker of a deserted chateau. The neurotic Gaby doesn’t want to sleep alone, whereas Nico the hermit doesn’t want any company. Opposites meet in this painterly, pastoral scenery, taking long walks and no longer feeling alone.
