On Bastille Day our protagonist girl is selling La Commune souvenirs on the Champs Élysées, gesturing toward a lighter and sweeter Breathless (Godard, 1960) set in present-day France in the midst of the economic crisis. Hector, a guard at the Louvre, meets the Bastille Girl and is determined to drive her to the seaside to make the most out of summer, together with his buddy (Vincent Macaigne). Yet the government has just announced cutting the summer vacation by a month to lessen the country’s financial burden. A whimsical tale made of super 16mm, director Peretjatko’s debut feature constitutes a bright star in the new “French New Wave”. And don’t you miss Chekhov’s little joke in the film!
