M+ Screenings: Stillness in Motion explores contemporary cinema’s relationship to Asian philosophy and ink art. Drawing together films from across Asia, the programme foregrounds minimalist, poetic, and contemplative films that downplay action in favour of mood, evocativeness, and an intensified sense of temporality. With each film reflecting upon different characteristics of traditional Chinese painting—from vast empty landscapes, to multi-dimensional treatments of time, to vertical framing—the filmmakers employ the aesthetics of slow cinema to sharpen perception and stimulate the imagination.
