Manon of the Spring takes place a decade after the tragic death of Jean de Florette. Jean’s wife has resumed her operatic career in Marseille while his daughter Manon (Emmanuelle Béart) stays behind to become a wild and beautiful shepherdess after witnessing Ugolin (Daniel Auteuil) and Papet (Yves Montand) unblocking her father’s spring. As Ugolin’s carnation-growing career takes off, Papet hopes that he gets married to prolong the family line. Ugolin falls hopelessly in love with Manon after peeping at her bathing nude in the mountain stream but Manon feels affection for the new schoolteacher. After knowing that the villagers are complicit in concealing the spring from her father, Manon blocks the spring of the whole village... Emmanuelle Béart was awarded two Césars, Best Supporting Actress and Best New Talent, for her exquisite beauty and intense performance. Daniel Auteuil fails to win her heart in the film but won the César Award for Best Actor and married her in 1993.
