Adapted from the amorous confessions in the 70-year-old Marguerite Duras’s Goncourt prize-winning semiautobiographical novel L’amant (1984), Jean-Jacques Annaud’s sumptuous 1991 film adaptation is replete with female desire and decadent orientalism. On a ferry crossing the Mekong River to Saigon, the high school girl (Jane March) meets an elegant, wealthy Chinese man (Tony Leung Ka Fai) out of a grand black limousine and becomes his lover. They make love in the afternoon amid the clamor of life in Chinatown. Like Duras’s screenplay for Alain Resnais’s Hiroshima mon amour (1959), L’amant portrays steaming passion across nationalities and cultures, this time across age differences.

改編自杜哈絲70歲寫的半自傳體懺情小說《情人》（1984），女性情慾與頹廢東方主義橫流於 1991年Jean-Jacques Annaud的華麗電影。湄公河往西貢的渡輪上，高中少女（Jane March）邂逅乘搭黑頭轎車的越南華僑富商（梁家輝），成為他的情人。他們夏日午後在中國城喧鬧的街聲中做愛偷歡，白人少女的貧乳與梁家輝的翹臀魅惑欠缺本土越南聲音的法國殖民地。杜哈絲為雷奈《廣島之戀》（1959）寫的劇本，《情人》同樣描繪跨文化跨國籍的沸騰激情，這回增添了忘年之戀。
