The State Against Mandela And The Others(HRDFF 2019)
Hong Kong Premiere

In a nine-month historic trial in 1963, Mandela and his comrades were sentenced to life imprisonment.

The people on trial and their families listened to some of the 256 hours of audio records of the trials at that time. The proud smiles seem to be telling the world that they had no regrets about their past deeds.

With animation, archival records and interviews with current survivors, the film moves back and forth between past and present, concisely and calmly picturing the democratizing of South Africa over the past 50 years. From different angles and perspectives, it elaborates on the adherence of Mandela's comrades and their families to freedom, conviction, human rights, love, responsibility, and how these beliefs are integrated with history and the individuals themselves.

This film was selected to be shown in the special screenings section of the 71st Cannes Film Festival.
