There is a Stone(bc X HKU Film Club)
The final film in the 2024–2025 bc X HKU Film Club will be Tatsunari Ôta’s There Is a Stone. The plot is simple, yet full of dramatic tension: a young woman from Tokyo wanders around a suburban town. She encounters a man skimming stones by a river, and spends time with him until dusk falls. Minimal dialogue and seemingly casual circumstances function as a Rorschach test that sets up audience members to have deeply personal experiences of the film.

There Is a Stone premiered at Berlin and won the Grand Prize in the International Competition at Jeonju International Film Festival. These two bc X HKU Film Club screenings offer a rare chance to see it.

The bc X HKU Film Club is a joint programme bringing together Cinematheque audiences and University of Hong Kong Masters-degree students in Literary and Cultural Studies. Film Club screenings are followed by in-depth discussions facilitated by filmmaker Kate Reilly. Those conversations are open to all audience members and take place in the 1/F foyer.

Reilly’s first film as co-writer and co-director, Memories to Choke On, Drinks to Wash Them Down, was a Special Presentation of the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival and premiered overseas at the Rotterdam International Film Festival.
