Set in the early 1980's, against the backdrop of China's
reform and opening, SHANGHAI DREAMS is the story of first
love. The protagonist, nineteen-year-old Qinghong, comes
from a typical emigrant family who relocated to Guizhou
Province
from their hometown of Shanghai in the mid 1960's. This was
the “third line movement” at that time, to strategically
mobilize
the city labour force to develop the local industry in the
remote provinces. That's the background where she has grown
up, where her friends are, where she first experiences love.
But her tyrannical father believes that their future lies
in Shanghai. How can they live together when they don't share
the same dreams? Based on his own experiences in adolescence,
director Wang Xiaoshuai, once a rebellious sixth-generation
filmmaker in China, has now demonstrated a tour of force
by
showing us how a cold and restrained atmosphere contains
a flaming heart.
