Produced by Tsui Hark, this 1992 remake of King Hu’s seminal Dragon Gate Inn recreates the original’s intrigue while establishing its own unique identity as a nineties Hong Kong cinema classic. Tony Leung Ka-Fai and Brigitte Lin play rebels on the run from a crazed eunuch (Donnie Yen). Hiding in the desert-located Dragon Inn, they meet mysterious innkeeper Jade (Maggie Cheung) and begin a battle of wits versus the eunuch’s henchman. Characterized by its wild tonal shifts, fast pacing and high-flying martial arts sequences (from action choreographer Tony Ching Siu-Tung), New Dragon Gate Inn serves as a spiritual prequel to Tsui Hark’s 2011 blockbuster Flying Swords of Dragon Gate.
