Ennio Morricone — the legendary maestro, who composed music for more than 500 film and television productions, experimentally incorporated different musical genres, struck the world with his innovative soundworks, and wrote a new chapter of film scores. His scores not only embellished the films, but were much sought after independently as musical masterpieces. Giuseppe Tornatore, the director of Cinema Paradiso and a long-time collaborator of Morricone, tracks the musical journey of the eminent composer from his classical music training in the early days to his several Oscar nominations for best score. Renowned filmmakers and musicians, including Quentin Tarantino, Bernardo Bertolucci, Wong Kar Wai, John Williams and Clint Eastwood, express their gratitude towards the maestro.

Sensitive 12-year-old Myung-eun (Moon Seung-a) is embarrassed of her working-class family and constantly lies to keep her true family situation a secret. When she writes, though, she is not constrained by reality. Pouring herself into essays, Myung-eun takes pride in constructing a different world of her own. However, the candid writings of a new student shake her sense of self, and prompt Myung-eun to better understand her family. Reminiscent of acclaimed coming-of-age Korean indies like The World of Us and House of Hummingbird, writer-director Lee Ji-eun’s understated debut feature excels in its perceptive depiction of the emotions and experiences of a child trying to find her place in the world.

The debut feature from director Sorayos Prapapan openly satirises Thailand’s education system and its authoritarian policies while also slyly referencing the country’s real-life “Bad Student” protest movement. Young math whiz Arnold seems very much the model student, enjoying an ideal high school life in all its cheery banality. Arnold’s ennui leads him to fall in with an exam cheating scheme, while greater student discontent bubbles to the surface around him — and eventually bursts. Showing a steady hand despite his “first feature” status, Sorayos adeptly balances an irreverent tone with urgent social concerns, and uses real protest footage to seamlessly lift his fictionalised satire into something significantly more.

Kim Quy Bui’s fascination with death informs the haunting Memoryland, and the director even faced her own mortality during the film’s post-production. Bui was diagnosed with lung cancer and unnervingly prepared for her own (thankfully unnecessary) burial while finishing the film. Separated by time and location, the three stories of Memoryland share themes of death and burial, following characters who die, leaving loved ones to contend with their departures. Sometimes the loved ones despair, leading to further death and sorrow. Ultimately, Bui’s stories and characters reveal themselves to be intricately linked by a web of traditions both followed and disobeyed, with change the only constant.

YOL is the rare film whose production may have been more dramatic than its story. Written while Kurdish director Yılmaz Güney was imprisoned by Turkey’s military junta, YOL was ultimately finished after Güney escaped prison and went into exile. Banned in Turkey until 1999 due to its depiction of Kurdish culture, this story of how five prisoners spent their week of leave from prison won the Palme d’Or at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival. The newly produced “full” version of the film restores the sixth story that was in Güney’s original script, finally realising the late filmmaker’s vision for this monumental piece of cinema.

Jan is a Turkish student studying in New York City. When his Kurdish grandmother goes to New York for medical treatment, she sings him a song named “Zer”. Still haunted by its melody after his grandmother’s death, Jan travels across Turkey in search of the song’s origins, only to uncover the painful truth behind the Dersim massacre in 1938 and its link to his heritage. Inspired by his own three-year search for the original version of the titular song, Kazim Öz shows the power of keeping collective memories alive with this visually sumptuous road movie.

A giant movie palace that became an endangered species in the age of the multiplex, the Scala cinema was the final single-screen cinema left standing in Bangkok. However, the cinema was demolished in 2020 after the COVID-19 pandemic caused it to close down permanently. The daughter of a former employee, Ananta Thitanat drew on her familiarity and nostalgia for her childhood haunt in this quietly moving obituary, documenting the space itself in its last days. As a former employee says in resignation, “Times change,” but that is exactly why documents of vanished heritage like this film are more important than ever.

Through its well-developed system of seeding funds and its well-run (and very popular) festival, Cinemalaya has become the laboratory, greenhouse and market in which aspiring Philippine filmmakers learnt their trade in producing and presenting work for audiences both at home and overseas. Some titles, such as The Woman in the Septic Tank, became box-office hits, while others, such as Transit and John Denver Trending, were feted at prestigious festivals abroad. In this talk, Cinemalaya programmers look back on the evolution of the festival and its role in Philippine independent cinema.

The Bad Man is a documentary of the life story of a violent and bloodthirsty young man from Kachin, Myanmar, who casually discusses murdering people as if it were not his own story. The young protagonist was conscripted into the Kachin Independence Army as a child, transforming him from an innocent boy into a ruthless killing machine. Now the war’s over for him, his gun-toting past has come back to haunt him. With all his wounds and traumas, he is now considering which path to take for the future. Are people born good or bad? It’s a question director Lee Yong-chao, a descendant of a Myanmar-based family, attempts to respond to, as he offers a glimpse of a man whose cruel veneer conceals moments of gentleness and sensitivity.

A Thousand Girls Like Me is an awe-inspiring documentary that tells the story of Khatera, a young Afghan woman seeking justice and protecting her children after experiencing years of sexual abuse by her father. Despite her many attempts to file charges, neither the Afghan police nor the legal system helped her. In 2014, she appeared on national television to publicly accuse her father, finally succeeding in bringing her case to court despite threats from male relatives and judges who labelled her a liar. Sahra Mosawi-Mani’s powerful documentary illustrates a young woman’s battle against cultural, familial, and legal pressures as she embarks on a mission to set a positive example for her daughter and other girls like her – something which has rendered nearly impossible by the Taliban’s takeover of the country last year.

Speaking truth to power makes for just another day at the office for the fearless journalists of Khabar Lahariya, India’s only all-female news network and the subject of Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh’s inspiring documentary. The wife-and-husband filmmaking team shines a light on the Dalit (meaning “untouchable”) women of the Khabar Lahariya as they employ mobile phones and streaming platforms to challenge India’s stifling patriarchy and unjust caste system, by investigating rapes, murders, systemic corruption, and the rise of India’s far-right. This rousing work documents an ongoing, real-life battle for truth and justice, and the everyday wonder women who make it happen.

In Mongolia, one-third of the population lives in poverty. Is this one of the reasons why the suicide rate is so high? Survivors or relatives of those who committed suicide, tell us their stories, some of them prefer to remain anonymous because suicide is a taboo. The stories come from different regions of the country, but the reasons given for this desperate act are similar: despair, loneliness, alcoholism, and the harshness of life. The example of a couple who once set up their Mongolian yurt within the walls of an abandoned prison seems to symbolize the state of the nation. On a frozen dump, they dig for scrap metal – if they sell it, they will have just enough money to buy food for a few days. It is an existence far removed from the clichés of traditional nomadic life.

Set in Luhansk, an eastern Ukrainian city occupied by Russia-backed separatists in 2014, Daria Onyshchenko’s political drama sheds light on the aftermath of the war in Ukraine as well as the forgotten people who cannot flee the territory. Nina, a Ukrainian-language teacher who is forced to stay in Luhansk and retrain for teaching Russian, crosses paths with Andrii, a teenage orphan and decides to save him after witnessing him being arrested for raising the Ukrainian flag at school. Seeing through the suppressed anger and sense of hopelessness in each other, the two stranded souls form an unlikely bond during the turbulent time of the city’s occupation by pro-Russian separatists.

While research on early colour films had been overlooked by major archival bodies until the mid 1990s, in the recent decade restoration organisations in Europe began restoring and reconstructing films stocks with emphasis on recovering the colours on film, and film festivals like Il Cinema Ritrovato and the Pordenone Silent Film Festival have also been founded to present and promote these films. Among the organisations dedicated to presenting these restored classics to modern-day audience is the Nederlands Filmmuseum (now EYE Filmmuseum), with its 1995 workshop ‘Colours in Silent Film’. Speaker Dr. Fossati, a participating researcher of this workshop, has been studying early colour films over the last 20 years. In this talk she discusses the history and conservation of early colour films, and the changes in the EYE Filmmuseum’s practices in the digital age.

Based on Ming-dynasty history of emperor being dethroned and the political machinations of powerful eunuchs, Dragon Inn tells the story of the loyal and upright Minister Yu being accused and killed by the evil and powerful eunuch Cao (Bai Ying). Yu’s remaining children are sentenced to exile to the border Dragon Gate. After several assassins were sent to kill Yu’s children on their way but did not succeed, Cao sends killers of East Chamber, the espionage agency. A righteous cadre of swordsman comes to Dragon Inn to rescue Yu’s children. A tense battle of wits and swords unfold as the contending parties, each hiding their true intentions, vie to complete their missions first. With masterfully crafted fight sequences both inside and outside the inn, this sprawling action epic is a master-class of pacing, tension, and choreography, as aptly foreshadowed by the Dagger Group Prelude featured at the start of the film.
