FOREWORD BY THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF LE FRENCH MAY
25 years ago, a group of art enthusiasts under the lead of French Consul General Laurent Aublin organised a series of cultural events in Hong Kong in Spring 1993, marking the birth of “Le French May”. Over the years, it has grown steadily into a 1-million-audience cultural festival, spending over 2 months, between Hong Kong and Macau. 25 years later, the spirit of the festival is stronger than ever. It continues to focus on the sharing among talents, the exchange between cultures, the nurturing of the local art scene, and bringing the best of French creations to the territory while integrating them into our everyday life. In 25 years, Le French May has witnessed a spectacular evolution in Hong Kong cultural arena with emerging new projects, venues and art groups to enrich the territory. Thanks to its audience and the continued support of the Hong Kong SAR Government, the Hong Kong Jockey Club together with its sponsors and partners, the festival has also grown to be one of the most recognised cultural events in Asia. We cannot be happier, or prouder, to celebrate our Silver Jubilee with major programmes such as the Inventing Le Louvre exhibition, the live-video Royal Concert of the Night by Ensemble Correspondances, a tailor-made tribute to French dance by the stars of Paris Opera Ballet and the performance by Orchestre Philarmonique de Radio France. Le French May is today, more than ever a local cultural institution dedicated to the enjoyment of its audience with an ongoing mission to educate the young generations and reaching out the less-privileged and physically challenged. As we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong SAR, we are proud to be a part of the great appeal of this Asia World City. Thank you once again in celebrating with us this Silver Jubilee. We look forward to sharing with you another diverse and exciting programme! Dr Andrew S. YUEN CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD, LE FRENCH MAY
