5 Broken Cameras(HKAFF2024)
In 2005, Emad Burnat, a Palestinian farmer in the West Bank village of Bil’in, obtained a camera. His goal: to capture the nonviolent resistance against an Israeli barrier that would cut off access to Bil’in’s agricultural land. In 2009, Burnat joined Israeli filmmaker Guy Davidi to turn the footage into a film. Framed around the destruction of Burnat’s five cameras over the years, the film is a diary featuring footage of the resistance and scenes of Burnat and his family. More importantly, it’s a captivating piece of personal journalism that shows the Palestinian side of a long-running conflict that still has no end in sight.
