SONG LANG is an exquisitely stylized tribute to cải lương (a form of modern Vietnamese folk opera), a queer romance, and gangster movie. Set in 1980s Vietnam, the film features Dung, a brooding debt collector who pays a visit to a cải lương company. He threatens to set the costumes ablaze unless the troupe pays up but at the same time he is fixated on a handsome young actor in the troupe. The film captures a dilapidated splendor that is shot like Wong Kar-Wai’s half-remembered, half-romanticized 1960s Hong Kong. Full of beautiful imageries, this is the gay Vietnamese IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE!
