Boys on the Bridge tells the story of Lil Fish, who while hanging out with his three buddies, realises that their different circumstances mean that their summer has come to an end. Will their friendship hold or will it fall apart like the bridge? In Moth, Xiao-mu, while his single-parent mother is busy working, fantasising how his silkworms will metamorphose into the monster Amola in his favourite Japanese monster movie. One day, bullied by some kids of the neighbourhood, Xiao-mu loses his silkworms, leading to a big row between mother and son. In Ripples, Yang-yang is haunted by the image of a water nymph, which Granny says was her very self. The short exudes a vaporous, undulating mood that sets the tone for fantasy and memory that characterise childhood. Following Tuo Tuo (2022) and Ruei’s Deer World (2023), The Stag brings us to the antler harvest season when guests hit the town. When Yung-he brings his two kids with him to the deer farm, a multi-layered allegory of masculinity and its discontents are aptly manifested.
