After a decade of big movies with big names, Zhang Yimou returns to a simpler age in UNDER THE HAWTHORN TREE, his first romantic drama since THE ROAD HOME. Two complete newcomers are cast as the innocent lovebirds of this rustic, Cultural Revolution-era love story based on a novel by Ai Mi. The daughter of a right-winger, city girl Jing Qiu is sent to the countryside for reeducation. There she meets Lao San, a young soldier with a bright future ahead. Romance blooms despite the class divide and the turbulent times.
