After dedicating most of his life to the depiction of modern Japanese life, Yamada
Yoji unexpectedly turned to the samurai costume dramas at the
advent of the twenty first century, adapting the work of the
distinguished novelist Fujisawa Shuhei into Twilight Samurai and The Hidden Blade. Yamada's mastery is obvious in both of
the films, where he focuses on the lowest members of the samurai
class. In the films, Yamada demonstrates their joys and sorrows
in the face of poverty, their helplessness in coping with a
changing time, the bitterness of forbidden love, and the clash
between traditional values and human desires. The works display
a complexity that transcends the mundane needs in the characters'
lives. Serve to subvert the image of the samurai, the films
bring Yamada to yet another peak in his illustrious career.

繼《黃昏清兵衛》後，山田又一改編自藤澤周平短篇小說的武士電影。山田找回與他合作過《兒子》、《學校II》等片的永瀨正敏來演下級武士。在山田指導下，永瀨一改迷幻形象，演一個沉鬱、貧窮、忠誠的武士；松隆子則承襲了父親的歌舞伎造詣，舉手投足盡顯傳統日本女性之美態。故事講獲授秘密劍法的片桐被迫與同門兄弟決鬥，同時他又面對一段跨越階級的愛情，念念不忘已出嫁的女僕。山田坦言「從未在電影中見過武士示愛」，故特別安排片桐向女僕說我愛你，為武士釋放了壓抑良久的情慾，成就他們的愛情。
The Hidden Blade marks Yamada's second adaptation of Fujisawa Shuhei's short stories. Nagase
Masatoshi plays a poor but honest samurai, while Matsu Takako
demonstrates the elegance of a traditional Japanese woman.
The story follows the samurai Munezo, who has been taught the
secret "devil's claw" technique of sword fighting. As a mutiny threatens to rise within the samurai
clan, Munezo is forced to duel with his friend. The film also
revolves around a love affair across classes, as Munezo is
in love with a former maid who is now married. Struck by the
lack of romantic confession in samurai films, Yamada deliberately
put in a scene of Munezo declaring his love to the maid as
a tribute to the samurai.

山田構思了十年，才完成的首齣古代武士電影。影片改編自山田最敬愛的作者──藤澤周平的三個短篇小說。真田廣之飾演的下級武士，在妻子去世後，每天日落時趕回家照顧幼女，被同僚笑作「黃昏清兵衛」；宮澤里惠飾演的失婚少婦朋江，邂逅了清兵衛後，往他家照顧小孩。兩人暗生情愫，卻因為階級、傳統、忠貞的制肘而不敢相戀。後來，清兵衛被派去處決叛徒，面臨生死之決，才向朋江示愛……片末宮澤為真田梳頭，送君上戰場一幕，堪稱浪漫經典。
Yamada spent ten years developing Twilight Samurai, his first foray into the
samurai genre. The status of the titular samurai warrior, played
by Sanada Hiroyuki, is among the lowest in the class. He rushes
home everyday at dusk to care for his young daughters after
his wife died, earning him the nickname "twilight samurai" from his colleagues. A long-lost childhood friend, now the deserted wife of
a local bully, finds him and volunteers to take care of his
daughter. Love gradually grows between them, but the confines
of class, tradition and the notion of virtue prove impossible
to break. Only when he is dispatched to suppress a rebellion,
with death looming around the corner, could the samurai confess
his love.
