被封為喜劇大師的山田，愛情作品不多，但經典輩出。其中由型男「Ken-san」高倉健和「寅次郎妹妹」倍賞千惠子合演的《幸福黃手絹》及《遠山呼喚》更是膾炙人口的話題作。向來自己構思故事的山田，一改作風，將美國作家彼得咸米爾的小說及著名民歌〈Tie
a Yellow Ribbon〉改編成《幸福黃手絹》，並把它拍成公路電影；《遠山呼喚》則以喬治史提芬的《原野奇俠》為藍本，在北海道拍出西部片格調。對觀眾而言，兩片浪漫感人；對山田而言，則是藝術上的突破。
Noted for his comedies, Yamada Yoji has only made a handful of romantic dramas,
but many of them are now seen as classics of the genre. The most
popular among them are The Yellow Handkerchief and A Distant Cry
from Spring, both starring Takaura Ken and Baisho Chieko. Yamada
uncharacteristically uses existing materials as the basis of both
films, adapting the Peter Hamill short story Tie a Yellow Ribbon in the former, and reinterpreting the 1953 Western Shane in the latter.
Sentimental favourites among audiences, the films also mark the artistic
breakthrough in Yamada's career.

山田罕有的公路電影，亦是日本史上最深入民心的愛情片之一。山田大膽起用當時只演黑幫片的高倉健，令他形象一新。故事講醜男因失戀受創，駕車往北海道散心，他在途中搭上單身少女，繼而遇上中年漢勇作。三人均漫無目的，遂一起上路。原來剛刑滿出獄的勇作打算回家，卻害怕妻子已另有所屬，於是一早寄了明信片給妻子，說「若然你還在等我，請在門前掛上一條黃手帕」……沉鬱滄桑的高倉健，魅力四射；含苞待放的桃井薰，顛倒眾生。
One of the most beloved romantic films in Japan, the film stars Takaura Ken,
the go-to character actor for gangster roles at the time, as
a stoic and weathered ex-con on his way home to his wife. He
is joined by a man recovering from a broken heart and a girl
he picked up along the way. The three of them embark on a road
trip filled with uncertainties and yearnings. The titular handkerchief
comes from the request made by the ex-con to his wife, to indicate
whether his return is welcomed. Sentimental and poignant, the
film is seen by many as the peak of Yamada's creativity.

Takaura Ken and Baisho Chieko reunite after The Yellow Handkerchief in this poetic
romance. On the vast plains of Hokkaido, a widow with a young
son living a hard life off the land is joined by an unexpected
guest, who stirs her long-forgotten romantic imagination. Just
when she prepares to profess her love, he confesses that he
is a fugitive, running away from the law for a murder he has
committed. In a film that dwells in the subtleties of sentiment,
Yamada refrains from using the piercing and witty dialogue
typical in his work to let the emotions shine through.
