與小津安二郎、木下惠介同屬松竹片廠的山田，跟兩位前輩大師一樣，對日本家庭的描寫最感興趣。相對於小津的無常無奈、木下的感傷與焦慮，山田的「寅次郎」一家是幸福、快樂的。但除了《男人之苦》的戲劇化處理，山田過去三十多年一直通過其他作品中質疑日本在經濟起飛後，物質主義、高速化生活對人與人之間的影響，《家族》、《兒子》就是其中的代表作。同時，山田亦對日本教育制度深存懷疑，透過《學校》系列表明他的教育觀、人生觀。今次特別選映系列中的首篇《學校》。
In the rein of Ozu Yasujiro and Kinoshita Keisuke, two of his precursors at the
Shochiku Studio, Yamada Yoji has been particularly keen on portraying
the lives of Japanese families. Without the pessimism of Ozu and
Keisuke, Yamada's "Tora-san" comes from a contented and happy family. Apart from the dramatisation in the "Tora-san" series, Yamada also calls into question on the impacts of materialism and fast
pace living on human relationships during the economic boom in Japan
in the last thirty years. Yamada is similarly sceptical about the
Japanese education system, as demonstrated in the "School" series. A Class to Remember, the first film in the series, is featured in this
festival.

One of the most talked-about film in Japan in the 1970's, Where Spring Comes
Late is the story of a family travelling around Japan after
the breadwinner of the family has lost his job as a coal miner
in Nagasaki. The family travels from the south up north, passing
through Hakata, Osaka and Tokyo, and lives through hardships
and adversities. A road movie with a difference, the film is
a poignant portrayal of familial warmth and sorrows.

堪稱是90年代版的《東京物語》。老父從東北老家前往東京探望兩個兒子。他看見長子為供樓為養家早晚奔馳，透不過氣來；他最擔心的二子，看來依然吊兒郎當，但兒子終於找到新工作，並打算與一個聾啞少女成家立室……
三國連太郎把一個父親的複雜情感慢慢推進，最後一幕回到家鄉，他推開家門，回眸一看，眼前竟出現了子女幼時的光景。父親一生的悲喜就凝聚於這一幕，可說是山田的神來之筆。
另請留意，山田找永瀨正敏演《隱劍鬼爪》武士之前，也早已找他演乳臭未乾的二兒子。
The Tokyo Story of the 1990's, My Sons is a story about an elderly father's journey to Tokyo to see
his two sons. The elder son works all day to support his family,
while the prodigal younger son has finally found a job and
is planning to marry a deaf-mute factory girl. The essence
of the film is distilled in the moment when the father, played
by Mikuni Rentaro, returns home and sees his sons in their
childhood - a scene that illustrates the artistry of Yamada.

一次參觀夜校的經驗，令山田矢志拍攝關於學校的題材。縱然這心願埋藏了15年才能實現。故事在一所夜校發生，黑井老師的班上有逃學青年、迷幻少女、藍領工人、阿叔阿嬸阿婆，甚至中國人、韓國人。大家來夜校上課，背後各有苦衷。一天，突然傳來同學伊野去世的消息，大家悲從中來，再度反思人生……飾演黑井老師的西田敏行與渥美清的戇直、忠誠與善良一脈相承，在片中大放光芒。《學校》標誌著山田創作生涯上的另一高峰，共拍了四集，是繼《男人之苦》後的第二個成功系列。
A
visit to a night school inspired Yamada to make a film set in
similar surroundings. Fifteen years later,
a motley crew of truants, junkies, factory workers, senior citizens,
Chinese and Korean immigrants finally makes up A Class to Remember.
Each and everyone of them has a painful reason to come to the
night school, and when the news about the death of a classmate
comes, it proves to be a chance for them to reflect on their
own lives. The film becomes another summit in Yamada's creative
life, and marks the beginning of his second most successful series
after the "Tora-san" series.
