When Parisian Célestine arrives to provincial France to work as a maid for the Monteils, it does not take long for her to figure out that this is not a standard-issue bourgeoisie household. Monsieur Monteil is the horny but frustrated husband; Madame Monteil is the cold and chemistry-obsessed wife; her father, the elderly Monsieur Rabour is a foot fetishist. Célestine does her job and makes only one friend. When her young friend is found raped and murdered, Célestine vows to take vengeance. Her prime suspect is Joseph, the chauffeur who shows every trait of a fascist. “Diary of a Chambermaid” is relatively structured work, considering it is directed by the absurdist Luis Buñuel. This is also one of Jeanne Moreau’s most nuanced, restrained yet nonetheless complex performances.
